Pesticides can cause negative effects on the body and environment, contaminating agricultural areas and damaging crops, as well as desecrating culturally significant areas. Pesticides can cause serious damage to the human body, even through skin contact. Nonpoint source pollution (NPS) is pollution from many sources, including pesticides and pollutants spread by rain and other factors. Mililani's Waiahole Ditch is a waterway created in the early 1900s to bring water from diverted streams to plantations. This waterway runs through residential areas in Mililani and a golf course but there is barely any protection against runoff. Most people are not educated or even aware of issues concerning nonpoint source pollution near the waterway and its effect on the environment.
